Do What it Takes to Finish Your Book or Suffer Pains of Stagnation

Featured Expert, Judy Cullins shares some powerful insights…

Do you say or think any of these comments about writing your non-fiction book?

“I’m not sure my peers and audience will want my book.”

“I don’t expect great sales or to be a bestseller.”

“It’s not like I’m ever going to be on a top TV show.”

“If only the local paper interviews me I’ll be happy.”

“I just hope to make back my printing costs.”

As a book coach, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard emerging authors say these words. Perhaps you recognize yourself in them.

PUBLISHING STATISTICS: Of the half a million books published every year, most books sell less than 500 copies. Publishers want only the famous to promote. The real sales for less known authors who are willing to market every day will come from the internet, blog marketing and social media promotion.

Who cares what the statistics are? What do they really have to do with your book? Is your book really competing with 500,000 books? Let’s say you write a self-help book – maybe only 20,000 were published this year – that’s still big competition, but it’s smaller than half a million, and if yours is a self-help book about succeeding in business, maybe only 2,000 were written on that topic.

Remember, many readers read more than one book on a subject. Just because they read another book in your topic doesn’t mean they won’t also read yours. And, if you use some book coaching, you can learn how to angle your book to a smaller, yet powerful, target audience. It’s far easier and more profitable to market a book (to an online audience that you can easily…) where you can readily find them online to market and promote to.

Why do most books sell less than 500 copies? Of course quality matters. But most likely, it’s the lack of direct and indirect marketing the author does, siince marketing takes double the time you spend on writing. If you don’t implement 2-5 marketing strategies each day, you won’t sell more than the 500, and most likely, less. Yes, the quality of the book may make a difference, but I’ve seen some really badly written books become bestsellers. It’s all about the promotion. The bottom line is that most books don’t sell many copies because most authors give up after giving little or no effort to promoting their books.

For eBooks and print books – look beyond the stats – how you can create a business around the book – and repurpose it into a lot of other sales to build your wealth stream.

So think big. Raise the bar. Shake off your fear and self-doubt. Here are a few ways to raise the bar, to make your book a success, but remember that none of them will work if you don’t work at it yourself.

Book Coach Judy Cullins’ Raise the Bar Tips

What You Believe about Your Book, You can Achieve.

1. Build Your Confidence – Get Feedback from a writing or book coach.

One of the biggest mistakes authors make is to publish their books before they are ready. Many authors are shy and afraid to let people read their work. But the more people who read your book and give you feedback, not to mention having it professionally edited and proofread, the better your book will be. If the book is really bad, you will be saved a great deal of embarrassment and money by not publishing it based on the feedback you receive. Feedback also gives you the opportunity to see your book anew through other people’s eyes and to improve it. Best of all, when people tell you they like the book and why they like it, you will feel good about it. You will build your confidence. That is a real boost when you promote it.

2. Ask “What If?”

Visualize your book’s end results. It’s much more doable to accept your goals as already true. Here’s a mental rehearsal exercise to create more sales.

Now that my book “title” is published and well marketed,

I SEE Example. I see myself smiling at my success.

I HEAR Example. I hear praise and testimonials from satisfied readers.

I FEEL Example. I feel exhilarated that my book appeals to my audience and they become my 24/7 sales team.

3. Work backward from the results to what steps to take to get there.

Working backwards can help you figure out your specific goals. If your end goal is to create 8-12 ongoing clients that yield you a six figure income, how will you make that happen?

If your end goal for 6 months is selling 600 copies of your how to book at $15.95, how will you make that happen?

Judy Cullins’ Rule of Thumb: Business from expanded services, more expensive book and audio packages and programs yield about 2/3 of my yearly income and books are about 1/3. Get real in your expectations, and don’t give up.

Build a Sales Funnel to Reach All Audiences

–Offer your free eBook to get opt-in subscribers.
–Offer a low cost eBook of around $15.00 for those who don’t trust you yet.
–Offer middle range products from $25-100.
–Offer high end products or services at over $100.

This rule of thumb on your sales funnel also includes your services.

The point is to connect the dots – to figure out how you can get your book noticed – by using the loftiest goal possible – and then following the dots forwards and backwards. Until you get them all to connect to achieve your goal. Be sure to consider all the possibilities. Think of a dozen ways you can get your book to hit the big time. How it happens doesn’t matter so long as it happens. You have a thousand opportunities if you just look for them and let others know you’re looking for them.

4. Engage in Baby Steps.

Write and take action on High Level Activities (HLA’s) each day. Give your book away to opinion molders. When I sent a review copy of my LinkedIn Marketing book to 6 business leaders who knew me and my other books, I asked for testimonials. I was so amazed at their generous comments.

5. Set up an affiliate program to sell your books.

Anyone who visits my site and sees the “make money selling books” URL can make 50% of the sales. Think how this one step expands an income stream.

Everyday focus on what you can do that day to promote your book and make sure that each success leads to another. If you land a spot on a radio show, ask the hosts if they have suggestions for other shows you can be on. If you get an interview, tell the interviewer about another great author you know. Referrals help make friends and friends help other friends. Network, meet people, talk up your book to everyone you meet.

If you are reluctant to act, get some professional help. If you think you can’t afford to, you may stay stuck for years. Too bad. Your audience awaits your great information, personality and skills to help them to a better life.

What part of your book project are you stuck on? Leave a question or comment and I’ll do my best to give you what you need to solve your concerns.

3 Crucial Elements Every Money-Making Website MUST Have

It’s easier than you think to transform your website from just a “pretty face” on the Internet to a money-making machine. Read on to discover the 3 crucial elements all money-making websites must have.

I’m about to make your life so much easier.

Putting up a money-making website can be as simple as 1, 2, 3 — just as long as you have these 3 crucial elements in place.

(And, if you don’t have a website, I’m going to share just how easy it can be to get one up TOMORROW. Yes, it really can be that simple — so no more excuses about “I need to get my website finished before I can do X,Y,Z.”)

Let’s get started.

1. Have a place for people to opt-in and download a special free gift from you. This can be as simple as a box located at the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Why do you want to do this? Because having a list of prospects you can build a relationship with is crucial to your business success. People buy from people they know, like and trust. A website, no matter how extensive, is only going to take you so far. Relationships are built over time and through communication — which is why publishing a regular ezine can be such a great marketing tool.

Now, I want to point something else out — notice how I said “a special free gift” I did NOT say that opt-in box should say “subscribe to my ezine.” No one wants more email — what they DO want is solutions to their problems. If you give them trusted solutions to their problems, they WILL take the time to read your emails.

2. Post a photo of yourself. People want to do business with people. They want to build relationships with people. Why do you think major corporations pay big bucks for spokespeople? Sure part of it is benefiting from the spokesperson’s credibility, but part of it is also putting a face on an otherwise “nameless, faceless” corporation.

Folks, this is where YOU have the upper hand from the corporations. You really CAN reach out and build relationships personally with your ideal clients. So proudly post your photo — you’re a real person, let your ideal clients see you’re a real person.

Now, I’d prefer a professionally shot photo if at all possible. And I would also prefer for all you ladies to get your hair and makeup done (yes, it’s worth it). It really does make a difference to your professional image. However, if you’re going to use that as a reason to not get your site up, then put up the best photo that you have RIGHT NOW.

What if your goal is to build a big business where people would be working with your team or your employees? Should you still put up a photo? Well, that depends on where you’re at in your business development. If you’re just starting out, it is easier to build momentum and get the ball rolling if you put yourself out there. If you’re already established, you probably still do (because, remember, people do want to do business with people) but there will probably be other changes you’ll need to make to your site so it’s clear there’s a team involved and not just you.

Bonus tip — you could use a video instead of a photo. Video is a great way to increase your conversions (i.e. turning prospects into paying customers or encouraging your visitors to give you their email address) but again — if you’re going to use video has an excuse to not more forward, then just get a photo up.

3. Make it VERY clear what the next step should be if they want to move forward working with you. Now, I’m a big believer in getting the opt-in, so if you look on my home page you’ll see I do encourage people to move forward by getting my free gifts. But I also give them very clear instructions on what they should do if they want to move forward as a paying customer.

Now, how do you get started if you don’t have a website? Just put up one page that has your photo, a description of your free gift and a place for people to give you their name and email address. (This is also known as a squeeze page).

That’s it. Yes it really CAN be that simple to get started.

Time Management Strategies Quiz: Are you Productive or Are You Busy? How can you tell?

Expert Guest Post – These days, not having enough time has become commonplace. Everywhere you go, people find themselves constantly in a rush, over-booked and over-scheduled with no time off. Life is accompanied by the ongoing stress of not having enough time.

Sometimes doing too much and being too busy can actually be our way of numbing feelings of loneliness or emptiness; not knowing what we want; feeling unfulfilled in our work; masking anger, even depression. Keeping “busy” can be our way of feeling productive. But is this the case? Are we really being productive with our time, or are we just keeping busy to pass the time?

Though it may not always seem so, how we fill our time and how we spend our time is our choice.

Answer “True” or “False” to the following questions in this time management strategies quiz to discover if you’re caught up in the “I’m too-busy” cycle:

1. I constantly find myself doing “urgent” things and trying to catch up.

2. Even though I’m always busy, I feel like I’m going nowhere with my life, business or career.

3. I rarely take the time to do anything for myself.

4. I allow myself to be interrupted and distracted from what I’m supposed to be doing.

5. I don’t follow a clear set of time management strategies for myself or my work.

6. I never have a moment alone, yet I have this nagging sense of loneliness inside.

7. I have a hard time saying “no” to others.

8. I find myself running from the time I get up in the morning until I go to bed at night.

9. I’ve given up on my dreams because of other obligations to my family, job or business.

10. I allow myself to drift into projects without knowing how much time or energy they’ll require.

11. I’m always tired and never feel like I accomplish enough.

If you answered “True” more often than “False,” then you may want to re-examine whether you choose to spend your time being “busy” or being productive. You may need to make a change in your life in these areas.

One difference between being productive and being “busy” is how you feel about how you spend your time. Feelings create thoughts, which result in actions. When you complete a task or project, do you have a sense of satisfaction? Do you feel like you’ve accomplished something with your time? Does your work make you feel energized and excited?

Another difference between being productive and being “busy” is the result you get with your time. T. Harv Eker says, “You either have reasons or you have results.” Are you making a contribution or are you making excuses? Are you adding value to your business/for your employer? Are you moving forward in your business or career, or are you spinning your wheels?

  • Being productive with your time requires that you set short-and long-term personal and professional goals. Otherwise you’ll feel like you’re going nowhere and accomplishing nothing day after day.
  • Being productive means you follow proven time management strategies and set up systems to measure and reward your accomplishments.
  • When you’re productive, you monitor your progress daily to see if what you’re doing with your time is on track with your goals, priorities and what you want to accomplish with your life. If not, you do something about it and correct your course.
  • Using your time productively makes you feel energized and excited about the work or tasks you choose to engage in. You’re in alignment with your purpose, values and aspirations.
  • When you’re productive with your time, at the end of the day, you feel good about yourself and how you spent your time. You feel optimistic about your future even if you don’t always know where you’re going.

No matter what you’d like to accomplish, the secrets to using effective time management strategies and achieving success are the same…

Develop Awareness. This is the first step toward being productive using effective time management strategies.

Decide what you want. Be as specific as possible. What can you change? The clearer you are about what you want in your life, the more you’re likely to achieve it.

Get Perspective. Most people don’t tell anyone what they want or what they’re struggling with. So they don’t have an outside perspective. They can’t see their way out of their current situation and they stay stuck.

Get Support. Very few people achieve anything great alone. Be willing to take responsibility for your life and how you spend your time. Ask for help and support starting today!

If you’re not productive with your time, if you’re not using time management strategies, if you’re not achieving the goals you’ve set for your personal and professional life, then what’s keeping you busy?

Top Reasons a Mastermind Group Can Fail

Guest Expert Blog Post from Cathy Demers

Being in a mastermind group rocks! There’s no doubt that the collaboration, synergy and accountability that comes from gathering together with your peers in a mastermind group is powerful beyond measure. It is almost guaranteed to help you and your business grow in ways, and at a speed, you may not have thought possible.

Add to that, the fact that the vast majority of extremely successful business owners got that way with the help of a mastermind group, and it’s no wonder that right now people around the world are gathered together in mastermind groups – because they work!

Sadly, I’ve spoken to hundreds of people who have been in a mastermind group (or several) that failed. They were then were faced with the time-consuming task of finding or building another group, hanging in hoping to squeeze some tiny bit of value for their time, or giving up on having access to the power and support of a mastermind group altogether.

One of the most common reasons a mastermind group fails is because the group contains the wrong mix of people to start with. Unless someone has been designated the job of sifting through the credentials of people who are available to join, and ensure there is a good match for everyone in the group, it will start off on the wrong foot. Because that task requires time and effort, almost all mastermind groups are formed based on only a minimum of criteria: a potential team member is available and wants to join. Not a good start for a truly productive mastermind group.

The second most common reason a mastermind group fails is because the commitment of individual members of the group changes over time.  It’s inevitable that, for some of the members, their business goes in a different direction, life interferes, they no longer make the meetings a priority, or whatever. If this happens to more than one or two members of your group…you may soon find yourself spending time in meetings that would be better spent elsewhere.  When it comes to “masterminding” size does matter. Too big and the group is in effective…too small, or poorly attended, and you miss out on valuable information, support and collaboration.

While there are certainly more factors that lead to mastermind group failures, it’s important to mention another important one: a lack of leadership or structure. The symptoms of this appear in many forms but most notable are rambling conversations and stories that are off-task and unproductive, lack of accountability, control-freaks who hog the “mic” , helpers who support others but get little support for their own businesses, and participants who find they have to “put their elbows up” to get any attention at all. Such mastermind groups are doomed to fail.

So, what do to about it?

First, ensure that the mastermind group you join is a good match for you based on criteria that is important to you. Not geography (who lives within driving distance) or availability, but important criteria such as type of business and market, levels of business growth and experience, and similar challenges and motivation.

Second, join a mastermind group “system” where there is a steady supply of new members who are just as committed as you. Such a system should not only match you up with the best team members for you at the onset but if for any reason your group starts to fizzle or is no longer working for you, you can be placed in a new group without lifting a finger – so you can spend your precious time growing your business.

And third, you want your mastermind group to have some structure. Not so much that it stifles creativity, but enough to keep the group on track and highly productive. You don’t want to be stuck running each meeting and you want mastermind system where the groups have good guidance and an experienced facilitator to ensure everything runs smoothly and productively.

The power and synergy of a mastermind group is far too important to toss the baby out with the bathwater. Avoid these problems and join a mastermind group that rocks for you!

What to Look For In A Mentor… And Why Kathleen Gage is Mine!

The following post is from Sue Henry. I am humbled by what she wrote.

What to Look For In A Mentor… And Why Kathleen Gage is Mine!

In August of 2008 I realized that social media wasn’t going away – yes, I tried “visualizing it obsolete but it wasn’t cooperating! I am a speaker and I needed to figure out to grow my speaking business or I’d  need to stay home and learn how to milk cows on our organic dairy farm.  It took me about 2 seconds to choose learning social media!

I had signed up for something and was on Kathleen’s mailing list.  She and Denise Wakeman were offering a course, “Act and Attract”. I bought it. Then I found “Making Money With the Internet”. I bought it. Then I came across “Making Money With Teleseminars”. I bought it.

Between August and the end of December, 2008, I went through these programs with a fine-tuned comb. I applied what I learned – or at least what I thought she was saying! When I followed her methods, I made money. When I wandered off on the “scenic route”, I didn’t. It was that simple. Now keep in mind, I did all this on DIAL-UP and was still successful!

I’d like to share 5 reasons why Kathleen Gage continues to be my mentor. Use this checklist to rate and compare potential mentors you are thinking of hiring. It will save you lots of time and money!

  1. Relevancy of information: The programs I ordered in 2008 are still relevant and applicable today. When I have questions or want to try something new, I go back to my manuals and look up the information. Why build a new road when I can drive on one already built?  I have been a member of the VIP Club for more than 1 year. After a few months, I got pretty busy and quit doing the assignments and listening to the bonuses, etc. Naturally, my business slowed way down. I am now in the process of starting over with the first lesson so I can rebuild. This time I won’t let myself get too busy! The information is still as relevant and timely now as it was 1 year ago.
  2. Integrity and honesty:  Kathleen teaches that you should give lots of value in return for someone’s trust and money. She lives by the principle, “The high road is always the right road.” She is ethical, follows through on what she says she will do, and teaches that these core values are essential to a great business AND great life. She truly walks the walk.
  3. Gives credit to others: Kathleen gives credit to the people she follows, gets mentored by, and who inspire her. She is open about who these people are, why she hired them, and the results that she achieved because she actually did the work! She recognizes her talents and gifts and openly acknowledges the gifts of others. She doesn’t try to be all things to all people.
  4. Spontaneous: I attended an event where Kathleen was speaking in Raleigh NC last year. The only reason I chose to go was so that I could meet Kathleen! During a sessions, one of the speakers had someone from the audience come up and do a live testimonial about the results they’d achieved using that speaker’s program. During the short break before Kathleen was going to speak, she asked if I would give a brief testimonial about the results I’d experienced by implementing some of Kathleen’s teachings…  I was honored to do so! She showed me, by example, how to modify your talk to create better results and value for the audience with a simple change in plans. Because she was so comfortable with this slight modification, she made me feel more comfortable, too.
  5. Keeps adding new products to serve her customers! I think I’ve taken almost every course Kathleen has offered. Why? Because each one is different, simple to implement, and gets results. The only time it doesn’t work is when I’m not working it!

I hope this list will help you sift through the “wannabe’s” out there and help you find the mentor who will help you achieve your goals much sooner. If you don’t have a mentor and are looking for one who will help you grow your business for years to come, I highly recommend Kathleen Gage!

Your Business Mastermind Group is The Secret to Achieving Larger Business Goals

Mastermind Mastermind groups are one of the most powerful business tools available. Yet, many people don't know how to start a matermind group or how to properly utilize them once they are formed.

One person who does know is Cathy Demers. I have invited Cathy to share insights into the power of mastermind groups and how to achieve larger business goals with them.

The Secret to Achieving Larger Business Goals

The power of a business mastermind group is that each of the members is striving for similar things, with each member achieving larger business goals by supporting each other along the way.

If you think you know it all you’re not thinking

Fool The day we think we know it all is the day we set ourselves up for failure. This thought came to mind when I got a comment from someone who said, "I already know everything each expert taught in your recent telesummit."

This was an isolated comment. 99% of the participants who responded to an after event survey had great things to say and each said they learned so much.

I had to laugh at the comment from the person who "knows it all" in that I found that even I learned so much from the experts I invited to the event.

To think we already know it all is the logic of fools. How could we possibly know it all?

Usually the people who say they know it all are the ones who may have read a bunch of books, listened to CDs, teleseminars, watched DVDs and webinars but are no further along than a year ago. Why? Because they know it all to the point of not applying what they learn.

Knowing and applying are two very different things. It is not the knowledge that creates our success, but rather the application of the knowledge. Not only the application, but the consistent implementation of information.

If you think you know it all that shows how little you do know.

What are your thoughts about "knowing it all?" If you attended the telesummit what did you learn from any one of the 12 experts?

Comments encouraged.
